The Project
Creating a portrait in sound and image of the major cities around the world is the basic fascination that intrigued Kalle Laar and Michael wesely into setting up a photo camera and a microphone in various places, beginning withLos Angeles in spring 2000.
Laar's interest in recording the sounds of the cities grew out of his work with the possible musical qualities of the sounds that surround us in daily life and the culture of music in general, as you find outlined in the statement of the Temporary Soundmuseum.
Wesely's technique of recording time within an image rather than a snapshot moment runs parallel to Laar's idea of audio recording. In his photographic work he achieves a connection between exposure time and certain events in ftont of his lens, which turns the system of photography away from the decisive moment and into something different.
The vinyl picture disc is the platform where Laar and Wesely come together, creating visual 'recordings' that can be played on a turntable, sound-imprinted photographs.
The exposure time of then photograph is identical to the time of the sound recording on the disc. Both recordings were taken at the same time, resulting in a project that tries to freeze various situations in sound and photography on one medium, a slice of time

SOUND ART
Experimental music is alive and well, as contemporary artists explore the audio-visual possibilities of sound.

Creating an aural and visual profile in cities around the world, vinyl picture discs grew out of Laar’s interest in the musical possibilities of the sounds that surround us in daily life and Wesely’s time lapse photography. In this case, the exposure time of the photograph is the same as the recorded sounds. The result freezes sound and image in one medium. The limited edition vinyl picture discs can be hung on the wall or played on a turntable.

Artwork
The picture disc enriches both Laar's sounds and Wesely's photographs and functions as well as an image on the wall as a record on the turntable. Unique aspects of time, space and sound are being created by this interdiciplinary cooperation. The b-side of the disc countains sort of a remix, using the sounds of the original recording as material to be transformed into a musical soundscape.

Preparation
One cityscape includes a minimum of 10 recordings. To produce one set the artists need to work on location for at least two weeks. The goal is to eventually 'record' all major cities around the world.
Therefore we wish to find support for travel, accomodation and basic coverage of our expenses
